They call it the "400-peak panorama" and from the Nebelhorn summit (2,224m) on clear days, they're not exaggerating. More than 400 Alpine summits span THREE countries: Germany's Zugspitze (2,962m), Austria's Lechtaler Alps, Switzerland's Schesaplana (2,965m). The Nordwandsteig — a 100-meter steel viewing platform built INTO the north face in 2009 — gives 360-degree views including 600 meters straight down. The Nebelhornbahn was COMPLETELY rebuilt in 2021 for €55 million after 90+ years of operation, replacing the old two-transfer system with direct 10-seater gondolas. Take it from Oberstdorf center, exit at the summit, walk through the restaurant terrace and tunnel onto the Nordwandsteig. Spend 20 minutes COUNTING peaks — bring binoculars if you have them.
🔄 BACKUP: If weather obscures distant peaks, the Nordwandsteig view straight down the north face (600m drop) is still spectacular. Edmund Probst Haus mountain hut at Höfatsblick station (1,932m, built 1890) serves food/drinks if you want to linger.
