July 14, 1865: Edward Whymper's team summited the Matterhorn - first ascent, but on descent, 4 of 7 climbers fell to their deaths. From Bahnhofstrasse, walk toward the Catholic church with the distinctive spire to find their graves behind the church: Michel Croz (French guide, age 35), Charles Hudson (English clergyman, age 36), Douglas Hadow (age 19). Lord Francis Douglas's body was never found - he has a memorial but no grave. Visit early morning (7am-9am) for quiet reflection, or sunset (6pm-8pm) when alpenglow hits the Matterhorn visible from the churchyard.
๐ BACKUP: After visiting graves, walk 2 min to Whymper Stube restaurant (Hotel Monte Rosa) where the team stayed the night before the climb. Have a drink in the room where they planned history's most famous mountaineering tragedy.
