   The Confrérie des Vignerons was founded with a mandate to publicly shame farmers who let their vineyards fall below standard. Their records go back 5 centuries — only 12 Fêtes have been held since 1797, and this Brotherhood still grades every single vineyard in Lavaux. The Brotherhood of Winegrowers Museum (Rue du Château 2, Vevey, open Tue–Sun 11:00–17:00, free entry) traces every Fête, every verdict, every costume. Walk up from the main square to Rue du Château and ask staff about the grading system — it's still active today.

   🔄 BACKUP: The museum shop sells Brotherhood wine selections unavailable anywhere else — worth a stop even if the museum is closed.

   Ride the Wine Train and Count the Three Suns

   13 minutes through the heart of the UNESCO Lavaux terraces — the steepest, most dramatic vineyard landscape in Switzerland. The 'three suns' theory plays out right outside your window: direct sun from above, reflected sun off Lake Geneva below, and radiated heat from the ancient stone walls at night. That third sun is why Chasselas ripens here and nowhere else on earth. Board the Train des Vignes (line R7) at Vevey train station (standard SBB ticket, around CHF 5 one-way). Sit on the LEFT side of the train for unobstructed lake views. Count the dry-stone retaining walls as you climb — each one was built by hand over centuries and releases warmth through the night growing season.

   🔄 BACKUP: Walk the Sentier Viticole from Vevey instead — free, takes about 2 hours, passes through the same terraces at ground level.

   Taste Chasselas Poured from Hand-Painted 1940s Barrels

   Their cellar contains foudres (large wooden barrels) painted by hand since the 1940s — family portraits and Lavaux harvest scenes that exist nowhere else in Switzerland. This is what 'terroir as art' actually looks like at Domaine Bovy (Route de la Corniche 5, Chexbres), a family estate dating to 1779, perched above the lake. CHF 25 for 4 wines plus local cheese. Book at least 48 hours ahead via lausanne-tourisme.ch or directly with the domaine. Arrive early enough to walk the adjacent vineyard rows before tasting — the cellar visit hits differently after you've stood in the exact plots.

   🔄 BACKUP: Lavaux Vinorama in Rivaz accepts walk-ins (CHF 59 guided tour with access to 250+ Lavaux wines) — excellent alternative if Bovy is fully booked.

   Stand Where 20,000 People Waited a Generation to Sit

   In 2019, this square was transformed into a 20,000-seat arena for the Fête des Vignerons — a festival held only when the Brotherhood decides the time is right, roughly once a generation. 355,000 attendees watched on a 1,000m² LED floor (five times the size of a Super Bowl screen). The entire structure was built and dismantled in 25 days. The next Fête is expected around 2039. Stand in the center of Place du Marché (the main square of Vevey — walk toward the lake and you'll pass the giant fork sculpture rising from the water). The scale of what happened here is invisible now — which makes it more powerful, not less. The giant fork by the lake (Jean-Pierre Zaugg's sculpture) is right there and worth a stop.

   🔄 BACKUP: The Alimentarium food museum adjacent to the square has permanent exhibits on the Fête des Vignerons and its history within Swiss food culture.
