Rainer Maria Rilke, one of the greatest German-language poets, lived in Sierre from 1921 until he DIED in 1926, writing from Château de Muzot: 'Muzot lies in a less arid, happy rusticity with many springs tumbling through it, with views into the valley, over to the mountain slopes and into most wonderful depths of sky.' He died December 29, 1926 from leukemia, buried January 2, 1927 in Raron cemetery during a deep freeze. Visit Fondation Rilke (Rue du Bourg 30, first floor of Maison de Courten), read his letters describing Muzot and the vineyards, then walk to Château de Muzot (20 minutes uphill) where he actually lived and wrote. He could have lived anywhere — he chose HERE for the wine, sun, and mountains.
🔄 BACKUP: If Fondation is closed, visit Raron cemetery (30 min from Sierre) where Rilke is buried. The grave overlooks vineyards and 4,000m peaks. Same wine view he died for.
